Tom Waits For No Man ...

by The Now Nows

/
1.
Tom Waits For No Man Down by the river where the bars never close there's a drinker everybody sees but nobody knows They call him Old Tom though that aint his name, they call him Old Man Tom cos he waits for no man Whiskey is his poison Black Rum is the cure He likes his Vodka on the rocks but takes his Moonshine pure He'll drink it by the gallon, pint, fathom or quart Hell he'd suck it from a thimble up a holy straw Down by the the river He drinks alone ... The barflies all despise him say he lets in the cold But the barmen like him cos he pays in stolen gold You'll never see him stumble, never lose his cool His hands they only tremble when the bottle is full He's drunk enough to drown a sailor, sink a goddamn ship He'd give the vagabonds a bad name if they gave a **** You'll see him every night down on the Drowning Mile You'll recognise the beard it hides a dead man's smile Then he goes Down by the river Down by the river He drinks alone by the river He goes down by the river to watch it flow Some men can't remember what they're trying to forget While others drink cos all they got left is regret And there's the fools who only drink so they can get ****-faced But Tom only drinks because he likes the taste He's the drinking man's drinking man's drinking man I've seen the devil himself raise a glass to the man God once offered Tom a taste of paradise Tom he turned around and said, "Sure, but hold the ice." Then he went down to the river Down to the river With a bottle in hand And another in the other He went down by the river To wait for no man He's a patient man Some do a double Some take a triple When Old Tom comes they just pass him the bottle He thinks his liver is evil And must be punished He don't stop drinking till the bottle is finished He's always on the take cos he's a drinker for real For the amber nectar he will beg, borrow and steal He'd sell his own Mother if it got a him another That's the kinda guy he is yeah He's a thirsty mother****er If you find his body by the river one fateful day The best thing you can do is let it float away For the old man and the river are but one in the end Forever going downhill as they wait for no man There's a moral to this story Kid don't turn to drink Unless you're real thirsty or don't like to think Drink the drink of life instead and order up a double Cos there's nothing but trouble at the bottom of a bottle Ask Tom! Ask Tom! Ask him where it all went wrong Oh Yeah He's gone down by the river To watch it flow He's gone down by the river To drown his soul Down by the river To drink by himself By the hair of the dog he's going straight to hell
